Introduction
We serve a group of intellectually disabled children and youths. We want to help develop our kids through improving their daily living and social skills, so that they might achieve independent living and integration into society. We are also providing a platform for students interested in volunteering and learning more about interacting with the intellectually disabled.
Objectives
We aim to maximize the potential of our trainees and to enrich the lives of our volunteers.
Activities
Music and Movement – The Heads lead the children through a series of action songs. They are encouraged to maximize the movement of their bodies, coordinate their gross or large motor movements and to develop a sense of rhythm.
Learning Session – This segment allows volunteers to interact with their kids on a one-to-one basis. Volunteers should gradually understand their kids and to tailor the lesson according to their kid’s learning pace and functioning level. The volunteers are given freedom to engage their kids in a variety of personalized lessons ranging from reading, writing and ‘life-skills’ such as the concept of money.
Tea – Both kids and volunteers enjoy a leisurely tea prepared by our Tea Heads. To encourage hygiene and independence, kids are taught to wash their hands before and after tea, and also to wash up their cups and plates when they are done. In addition, they are also encouraged to make their own beverages such as Milo or Ribena.
Art and Craft – The kids engage in a variety of interesting projects that help them to refine their motor skills. These sessions are planned by our Heads to allow them to learn and have fun at the same time. Past sessions include making crepe caterpillars, prints from fallen leaves, matchbox cars and finger painting.
Games – Our session ends on a lively note with the games segment. Our kids get participate in games that are crafted for their varying functioning levels, which also encourage teamwork. They have fun with simple activities such as ball-passing or favourites such as dog-and-bone.
